Biologist On-Call Remote

Field Biologist (On-Call) – Projects located throughout California and Southern Oregon
 
Established in 1999, Transcon Environmental, Inc., offers environmental consulting services throughout the United States with our Corporate Office based in Mesa, AZ and offices in Ferndale, San Francisco, and Santa Rosa, California; Cedar City and Draper, Utah; Rawlins, Wyoming; and Roanoke, Virginia.

Our highly successful team of environmental planners, biologists and archaeologists provides environmental planning, permitting, and compliance as well as infrastructure siting, Class I and Class III studies, Historic Property Treatment Plans, and environmental construction management and monitoring. We are seeking qualified on-call biologists to perform field work including special status plant and wildlife surveys, nesting bird surveys, vernal pool surveys, riparian and other habitat assessments, and construction monitoring.
 
Compensation and Benefits:
This on-call position is a non-exempt (hourly) position without eligibility for benefits such as healthcare insurance, paid time off, etc. However, on-call employees are strongly encouraged to apply for internal job openings of full-time employment (with eligibility for benefits.) Employees will be reimbursed for mileage and travel time. Compensation is based on qualifications, location, and relevant experience but will likely range between $20-$28 per hour.
 
Location:
The position will be remote only, reporting to our San Francisco, California office. Successful candidates will work and travel to fieldwork locations from their homes. Work occurs throughout California. Projects occur frequently in Northern and Central California, occasionally in Southern California and/or coastal locations, and infrequently in southern Oregon. 
 
Responsibilities:
  • Special status plant and wildlife surveys
  • Nesting bird surveys
  • Vernal pool surveys
  • Habitat assessments
  • Biological monitoring during construction activities to ensure resource protection measures are being implemented
  • Work will primarily be field based; successful applicants should be capable of working long days in the field throughout the year, including single- and multi-day assignments
  • Botanical surveys for qualified applicants (botanical experience not required, but is a plus)
 
Skills and Requirements:
  • B.S. degree (M.S. preferred) in biology, ecology, natural resources, and/or a closely related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of California fauna
  • Minimum of 3 months previous experience conducting nesting bird and/or special status wildlife surveys
  • Ability to perform work duties independently and efficiently with short deadlines
  • Highly organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy
  • Ability to interact and coordinate with state, federal, and tribal agencies
  • Proficiency with standard field equipment and technology
 
Experience in the following is preferred:
  • Experience monitoring and surveying for California tiger salamander, California red-legged frog, vernal pool crustaceans, and/or spotted owl is a plus
  • Botanical survey experience and familiarity using a dichotomous key to identify plant species is a plus
  • Possession of a Scientific Collecting or Federal 10a1a permit is a plus
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Familiarity with typical utility operations and maintenance activities
  • Familiarity with ESRI GIS applications (including desktop, ArcGIS, Collector, Survey123, etc.)
  • Excellent navigation skills and good driving record
  • Experience driving a four-wheel drive vehicle off-road or in rough terrain
  • Experience working around heavy machinery and communicating with construction crews
