Postdoctoral Research Associate - Hybrid Manufacturing Data Management and Analysis

Overview: 
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.
 
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Intelligent Machine Tools Group in the Manufacturing Science Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This position will primarily focus on the development of hybrid manufacturing processes, including data collection, management, and analysis.
 
Major Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Understand the relationship between: 1) machine tool geometry, thermal state, structural dynamics, and operating parameters; and 2) hybrid manufacturing performance
  • Use understanding to select machine tool geometry and implications of thermal environment and process heat
  • Plan and perform hybrid manufacturing experiments, including pre-process part and machine measurements, in-process data collection, and post-process part measurements
  • Actively participate in group meetings, project discussions, project meetings with collaborators, and report preparation
  • Keep detailed records of procedures, data, and results
  • Review scientific literature, understand project goals, and develop ideas to meet milestones and deliverables
  • Identify publishing targets, outline questions/objectives, plan analysis, and prepare manuscripts
  • Be a team player, help others learn and learn from others, mentor less experienced researchers
  • Provide prompt and thorough communication to PI, group members, and staff
  • Follow all laboratory safety protocols and help maintain lab equipment, computers, and facilities
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in:
  • CNC machining
  • Metal additive manufacturing
  • Modal testing
  • Machine tool metrology
  • Robot kinematics and dynamics
  • Matlab
  • Computer-aided design (CAD) software
  • Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
 
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
