Policy & Enforcement Section Internship

The purpose and role of these two positions is to support the Policy & Enforcement Section in providing recommendations for policies, legislation, and regulations to comply with the San Diego Regional Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System Permit (MS4 Permit) per National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) issued by the San Diego Water Board and other state and federal directives. This includes reviewing draft policies, tracking revisions and updates to regional, state, and federal regulations, and becoming familiar with legislation that governs the City’s permits. The positions will help enforce the City's Municipal Code §43.0301 that prohibits discharges into our stormwater conveyance system (gutters, storm drains and channels). This position would also support the Stormwater Division's Think Blue outreach program, which provides MS4 Permit required education and outreach regarding stormwater, water quality and associated subjects. Management intern duties would include review and research involving properties, policies, legislation and grant opportunities; writing reports and summaries; maintaining databases and spreadsheets; assisting Code Enforcement Officers in the field with tasks including water quality sampling, construction patrols, and evidence collection; Think Blue outreach event preparation and tracking; social media, media and outreach materials assistance; managing educational materials and giveaways; and other duties as assigned. Interns are limited to 20 hours a week during regular school sessions. During summer, winter, or spring breaks interns can work up to 40 hours per week. Work hours are during normal working time; we prefer interns are available for 4-8 hour blocks to allow sufficient time for work. Nevertheless, we are flexible and will try our best to help you balance your time here with your school schedule. Interns must be able to work individually as well as part of a small, fast-paced team.
Qualifications:
• Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), ArcMap experience preferred
• Enrolled in a Bachelor or Master’s Degree Program – Environmental Science, Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or closely related field preferred
• Able to work individually and as part of a small, fast-paced team
• Driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to internship
• A computer with internet access and access to a cell phone to communicate with team members.
