Automation Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY:  
The Automation Supervisor is responsible for the management, programming, and maintenance of all Building Management Systems (BMS) and Life Support Systems (LSS), including hardware and software.

This position supports HVAC, central plant and aquarium automation systems and works closely with stationary engineerselectricians and aquatic biology departments on operational priorities. One Building Controls Technician reports to this position. This position reports to the Director of Facilities.

POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Works alongside and manages one Building Controls Technician in the maintenance of control system hardware and software. Including Building Management Systems (BMS), Aquarium Life Support Systems (LSS) and other industrial hardware and software.
  • Applies depth of knowledge and best practices to automation maintenance and project work.
  • Approves cross departmental work requests and positively interfaces the Automation team with academy stakeholders. 
  • Collaborates closely with other managers within Building Operations, Exhibits and the Aquarium.
  • Works closely with the Director of Facilities to set priorities for the department, improve processes and set budget goals.
  • Maintains relationships with consultants, contractors, and vendors. Obtains bids and coordinates work with outside contractors.
  • Supports other departments with troubleshooting of cardkey access systems, security systemslandscape irrigation controls.
  • Manages the design, installation and commissioning of new equipment and systems.
  • Schedules and completes preventive maintenance tasks to ensure that automation systems are optimally maintained
  • Develops tools and methods for system calibration and maintenance, maintain documentation of equipment performance history & implement performance improvements
  • Conducts training of in-house service staff, including stationary engineers and electricians
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:
  • A technical degree in electrical, electronic or mechanical engineering or related; or equivalent work experience
  • Three (3) years of hands-on experience with building control systems, automation systems management and programming, including installations and maintenance
  • Minimum of three years managing technical projects

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Design-level understanding of Direct Digital Controls (DDC), automation programming and coding, ideally in Siemens Insight/Apogee and RCK Control Systems
  • Installation and programming of Variable Frequency Drives (VFD’s)
  • Experience in the operation of commercial HVAC systems and their sequences of operations
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Fundamental understanding electrical controls wiring best practices, regulations and code compliance
  • Ability to work independently, think on their feet and solve challenging problems
  • Solid technical support skills working in a multi-user environment
  • Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Self-starter willing to accept responsibility and drive projects forward
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working a LEED-rated building
  • Valid California Driver’s License and good driving record
  • Must be able to travel, work weekends/holidays and evenings as needed
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, use a computer, and communicate on the phone, in person, and online meetings/calls as well as this person must be able to transport 50 lbs., traverse a reasonable distance, and work while ascending/descending a ladder. Must be able to perform repetitive motions 25% of the time.
