McMullan Arts Leadership Internship, Innovation and Creativity (Academic Year 2021-22)
The McMullan Arts Leadership intern in Innovation and Creativity will contribute to the development and facilitation of adult art programming for both public and private constituencies. The internship will be highly collaborative and will require self-motivation as well as a willingness to think creatively.
Innovation and Creativity (I&C) is a division of Learning and Public Engagement (LPE). LPE develops programs and partnerships connecting constituencies across Chicago and beyond with the collection and resources of the Art Institute of Chicago. I&C creates virtual and in-person public and private programs for youth and adults through facilitated conversations and tours, artmaking, and collaborations with artists and performers. Both LPE and I&C are committed to creating accessible, equitable, and forward-thinking programs which are welcoming and inspiring for all. Students in art therapy, mental health, social work/community engagement are encouraged to apply.
INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES
- Become familiar with processes for developing learning experiences at a major art museum
- Learn from and have an impact on the development of programs in virtual and in-person formats
- Develop an interdisciplinary and collaborative project development practice
- Build a professional community with staff in LPE and other departments as appropriate
- Learn about the interdisciplinary potential of museums through engagement with vocational, wellness, and equity-oriented trainings for external partners
- Develop mentor relationships with field practitioners
- Build peer-to-peer relationships with fellow interns
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contribute to the generation of virtual and in-person program ideas connected to exhibitions and the collection
- Provide support for programs as necessary, including administrative work and technical assistance for virtual and in-person programs
- Pursue research into community outreach, critical pedagogies, and wellness/equity pedagogies
- Provide research for public programs, including potential speakers and performers
- Support the work of I&C and its audiences as needed
About the McMullan Arts Leadership Internship:
The McMullan Arts Leadership Internship program is part of a museum-wide effort to provide students from diverse backgrounds, including those underrepresented in the museum field, the opportunity to gain experience, career awareness, networks, and skills that will together position them to succeed as future art museum leaders. Those selected join an intern cohort and have access to a range of programs to support their development in addition to their specific departmental placement. Mentorship is provided throughout the intern experience. Interns are also encouraged to remain connected to the museum and to other interns as part of an alumni network.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate or graduate student; recent graduates (within one year of graduation) will also be considered
- Enthusiasm for and some knowledge of public art program development for public and private audiences
- Highly collaborative and willing to work and learn across disciplines
- Self-motivated; able to proactively contribute solutions and pose generative questions
- Detail-oriented and organized; able and willing to complete administrative tasks as necessary
- Applies creativity, generosity, and a risk-taking spirit to their practice
- Motivated by and engaged with equity and anti-racist practices
