CDC Public Health Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Research Project: The participant will be involved with the Data Analysis and Dissemination Team (DADT) in the HIV Incidence and Case Surveillance Branch (HICSB) with the development and review of national HIV surveillance products including CDC's annual HIV Surveillance Report, supplemental surveillance reports, public use slide sets and data sets, fact sheets, and with review and tracking of data requests. The participant will also contribute to the development and updating of documentation related to the certification and management of national HIV surveillance data. This fellowship offers the opportunity to contribute to high-priority, high-impact, and high-profile national HIV surveillance products. HICSB, in collaboration with state/local health departments, provides crucial data for understanding the distribution and burden of HIV in the United States.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained in the following activities:
- Contribute to the development and review of national HIV surveillance products
- Participate in writing and editing technical documents or protocols related to the management of national HIV surveillance data
- Review literature related to the epidemiology of HIV infection
- Manage and track status of report development and other projects
- Coordinate and oversee transmission and exchange of secure data files between CDC and state/local HIV surveillance programs
- Develop manuscripts for scientific peer review
Learning Objectives: Overall, during the duration of the fellowship, the participant will receive outstanding training in epidemiology and surveillance, with a focus on data management, analysis, and interpretation.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 2021. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
