Essential FunctionsEssential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Scope of Responsibility: Performs routine support duties within the various divisions of the Fire Department. Gains exposure to all divisions to acquire familiarity with Fire Department operations.
significant portion of time will be spent working toward your EMT Certification followed by your State Firefighter Certification.

  • Assist Support Division and Assist Administrative Staff with basic administrative duties.
  • Begin working towards a State of Texas Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
  • Rotate thru our Fire Dispatch center learning the ins and outs of what it takes to be a Dispatcher.
  • Spend time in Inspection assisting the Inspectors with routine inspections and assisting with education programs.
  • Assist the Training Division (FTC/PTC) with training opportunities.
  • Learn current FD Standard Operating Guidelines.
  • Participate in continuing education classes for Fire/EMS.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Note: Upon completion of EMT Certification and Basic Firefighter Certification, Cadets meeting requirements of Firefighter entry-level position will be promoted to Firefighter (Grade 27F).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience: High School Diploma or GED certification required; Copy of diploma, transcript, or certification must be submitted.

Required Abilities:

  • Able to read, write, understand, and follow oral and written communications.
  • Willing and able to perform strenuous work under hazardous and adverse conditions.
  • Willing and able to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers, supervisors, the public
  • Willing and able to participate in public service activities.
  • Able to consistently be at assigned work station and on time.

Other: Meet minimum scores on all sections of Compass Test and submit with other required documents, the City of Odessa Application, Fire Department Personal Declarations and other required paperwork.

License and certification requirements:

  • Possess a valid Texas State Driver's License.
  • Must attain a Texas Class B (Non-CDL) Driver's License within six (6) months of going on shift.
  • If not a DSHS certified EMT and TCFP Firefighter when hired, the employee must enroll in the first available class and make a continuous, uninterrupted effort to pass and become a DSHS certified EMT and TCFP Firefighter.
  • Failure to meet the Odessa Fire Rescue state certifications may result in termination as outlined in Standard Operating Guideline # 700.24.

Skills test: A Written Exam. Physical Agility Test. Background Investigation. Oral Interview. Medical Physical and Drug Screen. (Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of one (1) year probation and continued satisfactory job performance.)

Note: All members of the Odessa Fire Department must become members of the Odessa Firefighters Relief and Retirement Fund. The maximum age for a new member is 35 years.
