Graduate Student Internship-Remote

Providence is calling a Providence Ready Graduate Intern to assist with administrative projects in Oregon.
  • This will be a remote role with required equipment provided by Providence. If you reside in any of the following states, you can and should apply for this opportunity: Oregon, Washington, Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, and Texas.
  • This is a paid internship opportunity. The pay is $20.26/hr.
  • This is a temporary, non-benefited position that will last for approximately 6 months (up to 330 hours). The typical schedule will be 20 hours per week, however there is a lot of flexibility within the schedule. Interns will ideally start as soon as possible.
  • Preference is given to applicants who are in the first generation of their families to attend college. For the purposes of these internship opportunities, this is defined as the applicant's parent/guardian has not earned a Bachelor's degree.
  • A writing sample or cover letter is appreciated.
Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, as we are hoping to get these positions filled by mid-May. After applying, if you are selected to move forward, you will be prompted to complete a text-messaging-style initial interview. After that, you will be notified if you are selected to move forward with a live, video interview. There is some flexibility with internship dates, but most will start on June 14 and end on December 10, or once all hours have been used up. Most interns work approximately 20 hours per week, weekday, but the exact schedule would be determined between the intern and intern supervisor during the interview process.
There will be a total of 8 Graduate Internships available. We anticipate the projects to be in the following departments:

Affirmative Action and DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) Intern
Providence St. Joseph Health Affirmative Action team is looking to partner with a graduate student intern to support affirmative action efforts for Providence St Vincent Medical Center and join the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Caregiver Collaborative. Our Affirmative Action team is responsible for training programs, outreach efforts and other positive steps toward affirmative action to recruit and advance qualified minorities, women, people with disabilities and covered veterans. There will also be opportunities to work on projects that require excel or other analytical skills, pull data, review it, provide preliminary summaries, and then work with our affirmative action team to embark on more in-depth analysis.
The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Caregiver Collaborative leads system-wide DEI initiatives and collaboration efforts within all of Providence. The Intern will focus specifically on helping the Caregiver Resource Group Coordinator to implement CRG events, track activities and report metrics to the system office.
A passion for equal employment initiatives, analytic skills, and/or background knowledge and experience in DEI would be helpful but are not required.

Transportation Demand Program
In this position you will assist in the development and implementation of programs that promote and encourage alternative modes of transportation, including parking management, TDM compliance and surveying. This work requires strong independence, initiative, and creativity.
TDM work is about changing habits and engaging employees through outreach activities, commute incentives, and transportation fairs. This work is justified, and programs adapt through data collections and analysis.
As a TDM intern, you will be available to work varied shifts including occasional evenings and weekends for meetings and events. You are motivated to inspire change and bring strong oral and written communication skills, good understanding of excel (smart sheets a plus) and an eye for marketing and promotion.
Preferred (but not required): Urban or Regional Planning majors; outgoing, independent worker, great communication style, problem solve; strong written communication, marketing/social media experience, creative, can do attitude.

Human Resources (3 positions available)
Work in the Human Resources department will include:
  • Designing and implementing solutions that improve organizational, operational, and people strategies to drive performance so our Mission can thrive.
  • Coaching and developing executives and leaders to create an excellent caregiver experience and ensure an equitable and inclusive environment where diverse caregivers and candidates flourish.
  • Identifying key gaps in operational and organizational designs and capabilities, and seizing market conditions that enable new growth opportunities.
  • Build complex reports upon request and provides insight on HR analytics and metrics like turnover.
  • Help implement and track initiatives focused on our employee engagement experience.
  • Deliver high quality presentations and reports with minimal direction
  • Synthesize meetings and data to determine next steps, follow ups, and acts as "project manager" to ensure follow through.
  • Intern should have strong written and verbal skills as well as technical skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other office software tools.
Preferred, but not required:
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, HR Management, Communications, or related field.

  • Works comfortably in a fast-paced environment

Strategic Planning
The Strategic Management Services Strategic and Business Planning team supports the mission and vision of Providence Oregon by leading and/or assisting in the development of strategic plans, annual planning activities, business plans, Capital allocation support, regional market, and environmental assessments. This work helps to drive the advancement of key strategic and business initiatives.
The department works toward strategic alignment and integration across our ministries. The key objectives of the department are to optimize capacity across existing assets, and position ministries for long term growth. The intern would support this works by helping to:
  • Define what is in the hands of local ministries vs. critical to view regionally ​
  • Develop template and criteria for ministries to evaluate community level-of-care services and standards
  • Hospital services, program alignment
  • Call coverage strategy
  • Medical staff development plan

Environmental Stewardship
Providence has committed to becoming carbon negative by 2030. This means we will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our operations and purchases as much as possible, while working to build climate resilience through an environmental justice lens in the communities we serve. This is an enormous undertaking, the boldest climate goal in US healthcare. We are focusing on understand issues related to environmental justice in the communities we serve and establishing a pathway for addressing them in support we provide to communities.
We seek an intern to explore environmental justice issues in the communities and states Providence serves, from Anchorage, Alaska to Lubbock, Texas. We would like the intern to research current issues, community services and organizations currently in place, and help address needs that remain. We would use this to guide policy development or recommendations in Providence.
The intern would be doing online research, searching literature, potentially reaching out to community partners to learn more about the issues and services. Strong writing skills are needed. The intern would make presentations to our EJ Collaborative to update them on his/her work.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

This role will support efforts that permeate across our business, talent systems, culture, and community we serve.   • Recent completion of graduate program or fellowship, OR Enrolled in, and working towards a graduate degree program or fellowship
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
  • Enrolled in or recent completion of a graduate degree program or fellowship in medical research, mental health, public health, social work, business, finance, healthcare administration, or a related field
  • Medical terminology coursework
  • Experience working or volunteering to address health disparities
  • 1 year Customer service experience
  • 1 year of experience with Microsoft Office applications
