Conservation Camping Crew Member

AmeriCorps Camping Crews work and explore new, often remote, places in Vermont and sleep under the stars. Your Crew will balance the close-knit experience of group camping with observing our COVID health practices. You will complete projects that keep Vermont’s trails open while learning what it takes to be part of an effective, diverse, and totally unique team. Your crew will be mentored, taught, and led by talented Crew Leaders and VYCC staff.

AmeriCorps Camping Crew Members serve, work, and live together for the duration of your term. The season runs September 11th – October 31st with a break October 3rd-11th. We will have one day of remote training on September 11th and then meet in person on September 12th to head to your campsite.

Your weekly schedule is Monday through Friday completing projects from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. You’ll spend your evenings together at your campsite, and resting for the days ahead. On weekends, you’ll go on local hiking adventures with your crew and relax at your campsite!

While Camping Crew Members will have accommodations for their term (except for the break week in October) all Members will be required to have a place in Vermont where they could go should they need to leave the field and an emergency contact to help get them there.  Based on where new Members are coming from, there may be a quarantine requirement before our season starts. Our hiring team will be able to share more with you during your interview.

You will earn a weekly stipend of $275, camping accommodations, food while you and your crew is in the field. A VYCC experience will also teach you, a lot! You will get hands-on training and coaching in professional and personal growth. VYCC offers trainings in Leave No Trace, getting you ready to join workforce by improving your communication, teamwork, and more, and increasing your skills to take care of yourself in stressful or new situations. Each day you will learn more about the natural world and the projects you are tackling, have deep conversations about life challenges you or your peers may face, and deepen your connection to your team.

As an AmeriCorps Member, VYCC will help you access AmeriCorps AmeriCorps benefits, such as student loan deferment and interest repayment for certain student loans. We’ll also help you access federal assistance, such as SNAP/EBT and fuel assistance. AmeriCorps Camping Crew Members receive camping accommodations, transportation, and food while in the field.

You will leave your mark for generations to come. AmeriCorps Camping Crews take on projects in public parks, state parks, the Green Mountain National Forest, Long Trail, and many other public lands in Vermont. This work includes trail construction and maintenance, wildlife habitat and forest enhancement, light construction and maintenance work, and protecting the health of rivers, lakes, and streams.
