Recycling Innovation Engineer Co-Op (Fall or Spring)

About the team: Apple is committed to being 100 percent carbon neutral for its supply chain and products by 2030. The Recycling Innovation team supports this effort by developing industry-leading technology to recover and reuse more materials from end-of-use devices. Apple’s publicly announced projects, Daisy and Dave, are keystone projects to Apple’s closed loop supply chain goal and are a result of this program. 

JOB DESCRIPTION
The candidate will work closely with the Apple engineering team to research and develop new recycling technologies, assess their feasibility and utility through experimentation, and present a recommendation for how to push the technology towards deployment. The candidate will be expected to:

  • Assume the responsibilities of the Directly Responsible Individual for assigned projects
  • Develop a project plan to work diligently towards finding the best solution for complex recycling challenges
  • Combine industry research, consultation with internal specialists, and hands-on experimentation to inform selected solutions
  • Design and build prototypes to explore feasibility of proposed solutions and inform the design of scalable systems
  • Recommend best path forward to move from lab-scale prototype to scalable and deployable process
  • Generate required documentation to capture final solution details and transfer knowledge to deployment partners

KEY QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a self starter and independent worker with innovation, integrity and attention to details
  • Able to handle ambiguity and make decisions with uncertain or limited data
  • Able to communicate and establish relationships effectively in a worldwide environment 
  • Ability to present findings with confidence, backed up by data, research, and prototyping results
  • Insatiable curiosity to develop creative solutions to difficult problems
  • Proven ability to transform ideas into reality through prototyping
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely with machine shop or other power tools

ADDITIONAL SKILLS
  • Demonstrated experience designing and building prototypes to test concepts and ideas
  • Experience with basic machine shop equipment or power tool safety procedures
  • Basic experience with CAD software
  • Familiarity with process DFMs, mechanical drawings, and mechanical properties of materials
  • Basic understanding of robotics and automation
  • Familiarity with Design of Experiments fundamentals


EDUCATION
Undergraduate or graduate student working towards a degree in a relevant technical field of study, with proven mechanical experience
