Recreation Coordinator II – Sports and Fitness

This is a non-exempt, full-time, classified position with full benefits. Expected hiring range is minimum of range 16; Hiring range: $17.83 per hour - $20.65 per hour. Full long term range of position is $17.83 per hour - $26.28 per hour. 

DESCRIPTION:  Under the direct supervision of the Parks and Recreation Manager, this position is responsible for performing administrative tasks and supervisory duties in relation to the facilities it manages. This position assists with the implementation of a comprehensive departmental program, and is responsible for supervising and implementing current, short-ranged and year round community fitness center programs and activities, and programming for youth and adult sports. Self-motivation and exhibition of excellent public relations skills are vital as the incumbent will represent the City in its relationship with Verde Valley Little League, various youth and adult sports tournament directors, AYSO, and is highly visible within the organization. The leader that fills this role must be team oriented, relational, and have a high aptitude for public service. This person must understand and seek out national and local trends and have the ability to deliver passive and active citizen directed recreational needs. Expected to be committed to the department motto, doing “whatever it takes” for the success of the team and department, including performing other related duties as assigned.

TASKS:
The position is highly visible requiring extensive public, public agency, and inter-departmental contact with specific knowledge involving recreation, sports management, and fitness programming. Coordinates assigned operations in all youth/adult sports programming to achieve goals within available resources. Supervises temporary/part-time work force in sports/fitness recreation and sports program management Plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments; trains, motivates and evaluates assigned volunteers, staff and sports officials; reviews progress and directs changes as needed.
First line supervision in all fitness and sports programs. Provides staff workshops to maintain operational standards; conducts regular staff meetings and training to disseminate information and to review and revise fitness center procedures, policies, rules and regulations. Conducts training of staff in all Fitness Center and sports programming operations and safety plus ensures that all staff certifications are maintained. Ensures high level of program standards are upheld and followed. Works with the Recreation Coordinator and other departmental personnel in the development and scheduling of gymnasium facilities, to include special interest classes, recreation programs/classes, tournaments, special events, camp programs, after-school programming, family events, senior event programs, teen/children programs, dance programs, contract rentals and other indoor and outdoor recreation, facility, sport and fitness programs as assigned. Coordinates programs and activities with schools, community groups, and other agencies to maximize services and create partnerships for facility use.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  •  Knowledge of organizational and mid-level supervisory principles and practices
  • Knowledge of the principles, procedures, methods and practices for planning, implementing and maintaining a variety of fitness, sports and recreational programs through community participation.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of small division budget development and administration.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of marketing and advertising for a moderate sized fitness/ sports/recreation program venue
  • Knowledge of methods, practices and trends of community based fitness and sports programming administration.
  • Familiarity with City policies and procedures, community demographics and recreational issues.
  • Knowledge of fitness equipment and fitness center practices, programs, development and maintenance.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining effective interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in providing a vision for subordinate staff to attain.
  • Skill in interacting with the general public in a positive and educational manner.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This classification involves work developing and implementing health, fitness, sports and recreation programs.  The planning and implementation can be done in a normal office setting.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in physical education, fitness/health, leisure studies, parks and recreation, or a related field and one (1) years experience in parks and recreation programming including one (1) year in a lead or supervisory role desired, but not required. Fitness Certification(s) in International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) or other Fitness Associations is highly desirable. Certified Youth Sports Administrator is highly desired.
