CitySquare AmeriCorps Food Recovery Assistant

AmeriCorps is a national community service program that allows thousands of Americans to give back to their community and get paid to do it! CitySquare AmeriCorps Fall 2020 members serve vulnerable populations in programs at CitySquare and at partnering nonprofits in North Texas.

Utilizing our Food Salvage License, CitySquare’s Food Recovery Program will take otherwise wasted food and transform it into healthy meals for food insecure neighbors. Meals will be prepared in large batch quantities using our existing commercial kitchen production capacity. The prepared food will then be packaged, labeled and frozen for transportation. 
This service opportunity is highly interpersonal and requires that members serve well with others. Members must be able to accommodate changing service conditions and diverse points of view.

The AmeriCorps Food Recovery Assistant will support the operations of the CitySquare Food Recovery program, which transforms fresh produce into healthy ready-to-heat meals to alleviate food waste and fight poverty. Primary duties include:

Primary Duties:
  1. Help maintain inventory of prepared frozen meals, cleaning supplies, packaging materials, dry goods and refrigerated items.
  2. Create and print labels for food recovery meals.
  3. Assist with food prep and cookery, meal packaging and kitchen clean up.
  4. Transport prepared meals to Food Recovery partner sites utilizing an approved CitySquare vehicle.
  5. Lead the team effort on reducing food waste in the food pantry warehouse.
  6. Coordinate with volunteers or students who are scheduled to serve with the Food Recovery program.
  7. Support technical kitchen skills training- including, but not limited to, kitchen setup and preparing for class, tracking class attendance, supporting program students during training and food recovery prep, and assisting with lunch preparation for program students.
  8. Member may also have the opportunity to engage with community partners to support the program and prepare/serve healthy samples for food pantry neighbors.
  9. Members may also be responsible for picking up donated items for the Food Recovery program on an as-needed basis from partner sites.
  10. Record and track in-coming donations.
  11. Collect and record food waste from various onsite CitySquare Composting Bins daily and Warehouse as needed. Including helping un-bag or de-box spoiled food from the warehouse in order to compost.
  12. Conduct surveys and record results electronically from the CitySquare’s Healthy Meal Program Survey and our Customer Satisfaction Survey

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Available from September 1, 2020 – December 18, 2020
  • Available 35 hours per week during business hours, M-F 8 am-3 pm
  • High School Graduate
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (Deferred action and temporary permanent resident do not qualify)
  • Able to access reliable transportation
  • Able to pass a criminal background check and drug screen
  • 21 or older
  • Valid Driver’s License
