Podcasting, Radio, and Research Intern

Heritage Radio Network is a grassroots, action-oriented non-profit Internet radio station focused on creating a food world that is more sustainable, equitable and delicious. Our network boasts 35+ entertaining and informative weekly food-focused programs, and a division of writers who produce stories on topics including Advocacy & Food Policy, Agriculture, Hospitality, Science & Tech, Beverage, and more.

Working at HRN means making a serious commitment to improving the food system and helping to create an exceptional workplace. We are a passionate group of hard workers. Our internship program is open to undergrads, grad students, and post-grads. All internships are part-time. While our most popular internship focuses on radio and research, we also offer positions in the areas of editorial, development, social media, and audio engineering.

HRN internships last for six months and we ask our interns to work 15-20 hours per week (2 days each week; Wednesdays strongly preferred, plus a second day of your choice). Positions are unpaid, but can be applied towards school credit. Hands-on production experience is at the core of our internships and interns leave with a published portfolio of work that has gone through a rigorous reporting and editing process. Interns at HRN have the opportunity to engage with a community of journalists, food producers, chefs and leaders.

Who are we looking for?
Working at HRN means making a serious commitment to improving the food system and helping to create an exceptional workplace. We are a passionate group of hard workers. While prior experience isn't required, an interest in media, nonprofits, food, and/or agriculture is a huge plus. We're looking for self-starters who are able to set priorities and work independently, but can also collaborate and work as a team. If you're adaptable and comfortable with the evolving demands of a small organization, you'll fit in at HRN!

What do interns do at HRN?
Our interns are an integral part of our team. No matter which position you're in, you'll assist with writing, audio production, promotion, fundraising, event planning and more. You'll also have ample opportunity to build a portfolio of polished audio pieces for HRN's flagship news and storytelling podcast, Meat and Three. Some of your time may be spent outside of HRN HQ reporting stories, and we work with our interns to be flexible with scheduling and remote work as needed. Check out some of our interns' past work herehere, and here

Can I do this internship remotely?
Yes. COVID-19 led HRN to temporarily shift to 100% remote operations, which includes our Fall 2020 Interns.
