Musculoskeletal Injury Research Fellow

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter health and performance science and its applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, and nutrition research. USARIEM's highly skilled scientists conduct research in Biophysics & Biomedical Modeling (BBMD), Military Nutrition (MND), Military Performance (MPD), and Thermal & Mountain Medicine (TMMD).

The participant will take part in a large field study to understand the risk factors of musculoskeletal injuries during Army Basic Combat Training. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will learn and gain hands-on experience through 1) Recruitment of volunteers and coordination of research protocols. 2) Collect, analyze, perform calculations, and chart research data, using tools such as SPSS, Excel, etc.; 3) Equipment set-up for research experiments and data collection; 4) Administer exercise, cognitive and other tests, which may include anthropometric measures and collection of blood and urine samples; 5) Writing and editing of research reports.

This research opportunity will require field study travel; however, the participant will be compensated for all travel costs.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
