Environmental Scientist
BIO-WEST seeks a full-time environmental scientist to assist with field and office work in the Rosenberg Office. Under the direction of Senior Project Managers, the scientist will provide assistance to water resource specialists, wildlife biologists, wetland scientists, vegetation professionals, and coastal ecologists. Field work will consist of conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments according to ASTM Standards, Waters of the United States delineations according to applicable regulations, and other scientific studies as directed.
Work will occur throughout Texas and the southern United States in both remote and developed areas, travel and extensive work outdoors with other technical staff is to be expected. Ideal candidate should have an ecological background and general knowledge of natural and cultural landscapes, as well as a working knowledge of appropriate local, state, and federal law and regulations.
Education
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited university in ecology, wildlife, or other relevant natural resource field is required.
Experience
BIO-WEST prefers candidates with 1-3 years’ experience working in the environmental consulting field, with Phase I ESA experience required. Experience with wetland delineations within the Atlantic and Gulf Coast, Great Plains, and Arid West regions of Texas will be considered a plus. Candidate must demonstrate the ability work independently, as a team member, and general knowledge of local flora and fauna. Basic mechanical skills (working with piping, pumps, blowers, and other equipment) are preferred.
Skills
Required skills include:
- Knowledge of ASTM Phase I ESA regulations and procedures.
- Experience with Phase I site investigations.
- ASTM or similar Phase I training.
- OSHA 40 hour hazmat training.
- Ability to understand and comply with environmental regulations (e.g., ASTM, NEPA, ESA, CWA), and assist team members and clients with the environmental consulting process.
- Excellent written and verbal communication including accurate data collection, technical writing, report preparation, coworker and client communication, giving and following instructions.
- Adept computer operator and expert user of MS Office Suite; with the ability to learn additional software.
- Capability to work effectively with multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. (e.g., set tasks and schedules, prioritize work, meet deadlines, stay on budget);
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with coworkers and clients, work as part of a team, work under supervision, and work independently using sound judgment and initiative.
- General knowledge of soils, plants, wildlife and aquatic ecosystems in the southern and southwestern United States;
Licensure
Must possess a valid class C Texas driver's license, have a satisfactory driving record, allow records review for the past 3 years, and comply with company drug and alcohol testing policies.
Working Conditions
Must be able to repeatedly conduct field work in remote locations, outdoors for extended periods of time and under extreme conditions and variety of climates, hike long distances, be aware of and able to respond to hazardous wildlife and conditions, lift ~50 pounds, complete ATV and safety training, and work outside of the normal business hours of 8:00 am–5:00 pm, including weekends and holidays. Candidate should be in good physical condition, have flexible schedules, be able to work in the field approximately 50-75 percent of the time, and travel overnight if required.
