Physiology/Kinesiology Support Researcher

The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (CCDC-SC) is located at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research Center in Natick, Massachusets, under the Army Futures Command. Stretching back to 1954, the CCDC Soldier Center's history of support for the Soldier has continued uninterrupted for more than six decades, with a focus on Soldier-related research, development, and testing and evaluation efforts. Made up of a diverse workforce comprised of scientists, engineers, technologists, and equipment designers, the CCDC Soldier Center provides a wide range of capabilities to the Soldier, to include field feeding and life support systems, clothing, precision airdrop systems, and ballistic, chemical and laser-protection systems. CCDC-SC also supports Soldier-related research, development, testing, and evaluation efforts. CCDC-SC’s highly skilled team of scientists perform a variety of research that includes soldiers' uniforms, meals ready to eat (MREs), tents, sleeping bags, parachutes, and airdrop capabilities. If the Soldiers wear it, eat it, sleep under it, or have it airdropped to them, the product research and development can be traced back to the mission of CCDC-SC.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will collaborate with CCDC-SC scientists in developing novel in vitro mammalian cell protocols and new laboratory analysis techniques to accelerate the discovery of human performance research. Specifically, the participant will collect and analyze mammalian muscle cell data from established models of exercise-induced muscle damage in vitro. Utilizing a novel capability from vendor Keyence Corp, a combination microscope, incubator, and plate reader with the potential to accelerate discovery significantly, the participant will compare via a test and evaluation framework, the new capability against established and accepted standard techniques. The laboratory facilities at CCDC-SC have a long history of the state of the art labs, equipment, infrastructure to support participants research needs. In growing and maintaining several cell lines, including immune cell lines the participant will ensure proper cell growth conditions. The participant will monitor growth morphology, isolate, and transfer cells to assay plates for exposure to simulated exercise-induced muscle damage.

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by CCDC Soldier Center. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
