Climate Corps Education Outside

Climate Corps Education Outside (CCEO) is a yearlong AmeriCorps Fellowship program. The Climate Corps Education Outside (CCEO) program serves public elementary schools in the Bay Area. This particular position is located in Oakland, CA and we are prioritizing candidates from or familiar with this area. As a CCEO Fellow, you will teach garden-based science and environmental literacy, serving a high percentage of low-income K-5 students and many English-language learners. CCEO Fellows must be committed to social justice and have cultivated or be willing to cultivate cultural competence and humility.
As a CCEO Fellow, you will:
- Teach and plan ecoliteracy lessons for high needs elementary school students in the Oakland Unified School District
- Cultivate a garden space to promote urban students’ connection to the environment and nature.
- Activate community and volunteer power to develop a lush outdoor classroom
- Identify and fulfill a fundraising opportunity to promote the continuation of garden programming at a school site.
- Participate in the CCEO professional development program biweekly alongside a cohort of emerging education and sustainability professionals.
Basic Eligibility
Fellows must:
- Have ability to work in the US
- Be 17 years old or older
- Pass state criminal and FBI background checks
- Be negative for tuberculosis
- Be able and willing to commit to 1200 hours per year over at least one academic year*
Additional Qualifications
- A commitment to Climate Corps Education Outside’s mission
- Experience teaching and working with groups of students (especially ages 5-12) outdoors
- Experience working with children and adults from diverse backgrounds
- Experience with gardening or farming
- Experience prioritizing and managing projects
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Competency in Spanish preferred
Candidates must be available to work from September 2020 for one academic year. During the school year, Mondays through Thursdays are dedicated to teaching in the outdoor classroom at your school site and guiding science, and sustainability efforts in the community. Two Fridays a month are designated for professional development, which includes formal learning workshops on garden-based education, leadership for community engagement, and horticulture and garden design as well as peer coaching and administration time.
*Second term is contingent on school site fit and continuation of program funding
Compensation
You will receive a taxable living allowance stipend of $2,115 per month and an AmeriCorps end of program education award of $4,266.
