Communication and Design Specialist

Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council is a non-profit organization formed by the Native American Tribes of Wisconsin. We serve all WI tribes by providing administration of grant-funded programs either directly or with sub grants. Programs serve a range of functions from Children to Elders. Our Mission is: To Enhance the quality of life for all Native People. 
Communication and Design Specialist
Primary responsibilities are to manage communications for the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC) as directed. This position will create and deliver communications to support American Indian/Alaska Native communities throughout the Great Lakes (Bemidji) Area (Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Chicago). Responsibilities include carrying out a broad range of health communication activities such as: creating and disseminating health messaging; working with vendors to design health-related communication platforms; writing press releases; content development and management; writing, editing, and formatting documents; graphic design; and delivering training in relation to designing health communications. Daily attendance is an essential function of this position. Occasional travel is a required to meet the requirements of the job.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide primary communication functions and services to fulfill grant requirements.
  • Develop effective and engaging communication strategies and products.
  • Work with Epidemiology Center staff to assess communication needs of communities and other partners to drive material and communication solution development.
  • Assist contracted digital solutions provider and GLITEC staff with development and utilization of a unified engagement platform.
  • Manage subscriber networks.
  • Manage content for digital solution for emergency response and other communications.
  • Assist in communication of strategies or messages from organization, department, or project leadership (e.g. drafting press releases for mass media or organization website)
  • Produce print and digital risk communication, and health education content and materials, from concept through production.
  • Collaborate with others to create or obtain copy and design elements for communication products.
  • Participate in learning sessions, site visits, grantee meetings, and regional meetings as directed.
  • Assist with funding agency reports. Prepare, review and forward reports according to requirements.
  • Contribute to ongoing strategic planning, reporting and program support to ensure the successful development and implementation of the program.
This is a full-time salaried opportunity with scheduled hours of Mon-Fri 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, 40-45 hours per week with a primary work location in Lac Du Flambeau, WI. There may be variations to schedule to accommodate projects. Occasional travel may be required. 
This position has a salary range of $50,000 - $60,000 (based on experience) with benefits including Annual/Personal Leave, Holiday Pay, Health, Dental, Life & AD&D, STD and LTD Insurance, FSA and 401(k) Retirement Plan. Background check and drug screen are required before employment.   
Qualifications: An equivalent combination of experience and education that will provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered. Required: Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, communications, journalism, or related field from an accredited college or university, and two years of experience. Able to produce well- designed and well-written products that resonate with American Indian community members. Desired: Experience working on health-related communications. Experience working with American Indian Tribal governments and organization and/or not-for-profit entities in epidemiology. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Individual must possess: excellent written and verbal communication skills; professional demeanor and appearance; problem solving skills; ability to manage time effectively; self-motivation skills; work effectively under pressure; ability to build positive work relationships with internal and external customers; ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people; speak in front of groups. Individual must be able to address a wide range of intellectual and practical problems, apply design and use principles to communication products, and possess the ability to compose complex business correspondence (press releases, reports). Requires a high level of confidentiality. Must possess valid driver’s license and/or reliable transportation with adequate insurance and ability to travel.
