Unpaid Cyber Audit and Compliance Intern

New York City Cyber Command (NYC3) was created in 2017 by Mayor’s Executive Order to lead New York City’s cyber defense efforts, working across more than 100 agencies and offices to prevent, detect, respond, and recover from cyber threats. New York City Cyber Command (NYC3) is committed to protecting City infrastructure and critical systems from cyber threats, and helping residents become safer in their digital lives.

As the organization defending the largest municipality in the country, NYC3 is charged with directing citywide incident response, setting citywide cybersecurity policies and standards, and working with City agencies to strengthen their cyber defenses. 
 
Job Description
The Audit and Compliance Summer Intern will work with the Audit and Compliance Unit for NYC Cyber Command. Under the supervision of the Audit and Compliance Unit’s leaders, the Audit and Compliance Intern will help to shape the Audit and Compliance program and enforce policies and procedures with regards to cyber security of NYC Agencies.

This internship opportunity is geared toward students who will receive credit towards their academic requirements as part of participating in this educational program. The internship is unpaid and interns are not automatically entitled to employment with NYC3 at the conclusion of the program.

Responsibilities include:
  • Evaluate the NYC Agencies’ cybersecurity programs or their individual components to determine compliance with published Citywide cybersecurity policies and standards;
  • Participate in discussions with Legal and IT teams across NYC Agencies and provide opinions on various Legal and Compliance topics, such as cybersecurity, privacy and data protection, and information discoverability under Freedom of Information Law;
  • Participate in audits of cybersecurity programs and projects and in reviewing of previous audits’ findings;
  • Communicate with numerous legal and cybersecurity related organizations within NYC;
  • Assess 3rd party cybersecurity risks;
  • Assess and revise NYC Agencies’ documented information security and technology policies, procedures and practices;
  • Develop and manage internal policies, procedures and processes as related to cybersecurity compliance and best practices;
  • Provide recommendations for possible improvements to the Audit and Compliance program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
All candidates must be enrolled in a degree bearing program at an accredited institution.

Preferred Skills
  • Outstanding critical thinking skills showing pros and cons of scenarios to help executives choose policy directions;
  • Thorough research capabilities, especially in areas of cybersecurity, legislative and legal case reviews and impact;
  • Basic understanding of networks and systems and how to identify vulnerabilities within each;
  • Excellent writing skills, especially legal writing, technical writing or policy writing;
  • Excellent listening and teamwork skills;
  • A dedication to public service. 
 
SPECIAL NOTE
Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, this opportunity will be remote. Internship will be unpaid and interns must show proof of their university giving academic credit or funding from their university or authorized 3rd party. The length of this part or full time, 17 up to 35 hour per week internship will be no longer than 12 weeks.
