Advocacy Director / Senior Advocacy Associate

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project is looking for an experienced political strategist and communications professional who can leverage coalition campaign and traditional and social media to dismantle police surveillance. S.T.O.P. fights state and local government surveillance across New York, strengthening privacy and civil rights, and creating a model for challenging police surveillance across the globe. Our work highlights the discriminatory impact of surveillance on Muslim Americans, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, and communities of color, particularly the unique trauma of anti-Black policing.
The senior advocacy associate or advocacy director will be a part of S.T.O.P.’s core team, with primary responsibility for the organizations messaging, branding, and rapid reaction media engagement. The senior advocacy associate or advocacy director will be expected to help build S.T.O.P.’s communications staff from a single FTE into an Advocacy Department in the next 24 months.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain relationships with journalists, editors, communications staffers, and influencers;
  • Quickly produce persuasive press releases, media advisories, and social media toolkits;
  • Develop medium and long-range communications and media strategies across all platforms;
  • Produce rapid reaction social media content and distribute same;
  • Regularly review media performance, with data-driven recommendations for improvement;
  • Work as part of local, state, and national advocacy coalitions;
  • Coordinate production staff and outreach for S.T.O.P.’s forthcoming podcast;
  • Supervise other advocacy staff; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
  • A personal commitment to dismantling systems of mass surveillance and white supremacy;
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills;
  • Minimum of 4 years of social media, online campaign, communications experience, with track-record of successfully generating high audience engagement;
  • Knowledge of New York City and State politics and community-based organizations;
  • Strong problem solving, organizational, time-management, and project management skills;
  • Passion for storytelling, with the ability to transform technical and legal issues into broadly engaging, emotionally rooted, and informative narratives;
  • College degree required, law degree or graduate public policy degree preferred; and
  • Proficiency in multiple languages preferred; and
  • Able to nurture a sense of community and mutual support within an organization.
