Americorps-Mentor Dubuque Recruitment Specialist (2020-2021)

Contract Dates: 900 hours: September 8, 2020 – August 21, 2021 (Minimum of 18 hours per
week)
Salary: Living allowance of $8,550 ($342-tax every 2 weeks over 50 weeks) & Education award
of $3,097.50*

GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Mentor Recruitment Specialist AmeriCorps Member will serve alongside their Site Supervisor
at Mentor Dubuque to provide community outreach and recruit potential mentors order to
promote strong, long-term mentor relationships.
AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that take a different approach to
improving lives and fostering civic engagement. Members commit their time to address critical
community needs like increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty,
preparing for disasters, and more. More information can be found at

AmeriCorps Members receive a bi-weekly living stipend and upon the completion of their
contract, AmeriCorps member will receive education award in the form of an electronic payment
through my.americorpgs.gov. Education award may be used to pay educational costs at eligible
post-secondary educational institutions or qualified student loans. Members who are 55+ years
of age can transfer award to child or grandchild.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Cooperate closely with AmeriCorps members serving at the Multicultural Family Center to
create and develop collaboration on teen-focused programming between the program partners.
• Establish and maintain professional relationships with community partners.
• Develop strategic interventions to identify and recruit potential mentors within the community.
• Develop and present community education about mentoring that offers community members
the opportunity to enroll as mentors.
• Through scheduled in-person interviews, telephone and electronic contact, ascertain that the
potential mentor is a safe, caring adult with the ability to meet the program's requirements by
documenting and monitoring interviews and reference checks.
• Conduct background and reference checks on all potential mentors.
• Identify potential problems and barriers with potential mentors to address as early as
possible. Promptly notify supervisor regarding concerns, which may negatively impact a match.
• Collaborate closely with the Match Support Specialist AmeriCorps Member to match mentors
with appropriate mentees for a meaningful match experience.
• Assess individual training needs, information and support needs for each match participant to
assure a positive youth development experience for the child, and successful and satisfying
experience for the volunteer.
• Develop and implement pre-match trainings with all mentors to ensure mentors are prepared
to enter into a mentoring relationship.
• Ensure high-level proficiency in applying child safety and risk management knowledge,
policies and procedures throughout all aspects of job function.
• Implement and promote match activities to support ongoing volunteer involvement through
individualized recognition, annual events, and re-engagement strategies.
• Plans, implements and occasionally supervises activities for children matched and on waiting
list. This may be done in conjunction with community volunteers.
• Engage in evaluation activities in order to assess the length and strength of each match.
• Establish, monitor and meet goals for survey completion and match statistics collection.
• Identify and promote re-engagement of volunteers as Mentors, board members, donors and in
other volunteer capacities.
• Share with development and/or marketing staff potential partnership relationships as
discovered through volunteers' and parents' employers and affiliations.
• Serve at special events in order to sustain/expand the program.
• Collaborate with speaking engagements and promotional booths/events/exhibits in the
community.
• Conduct mentor and mentee interviews as necessary.
• Maintain and uphold confidentiality practices and policies.
• Attend all AmeriCorps trainings and service projects.
• The program may require the member to engage in other allowable activities that are not
specifically outlined in the position description, but that support the AmeriCorps program design
and which help the program meet its goals. In no circumstance will members be asked to
perform prohibited activities outlined in the Member Service Agreement.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree, preferably in social work, human services, or a related field
• Desire to work with children and volunteers
• Must have reliable transportation
• Good communication skills and organization skills necessary
• Must complete required agency trainings such as Mandatory Reporter training
• Experience working with children and youth preferred
• Be at least 18 years old, and a US citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien
• Must be able to pass a 3-part background check
• Must be creative, energetic, dependable and a self-starter
• Must be a positive role model for students

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Position requires service member to sit at a desk for long periods of time
• Some repetitive motions such as typing
• Occasionally involves lifting, squatting, bending over, and engaging in other physical activities
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
SERVICE SCHEDULE:
Service activities will take place predominately at Mentor Dubuque. The AmeriCorps Member
must be able to serve between the hours of 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Contract may include some evenings and weekends. Members may be asked to serve at special
events and activities within the grant partnership that may be outside of the member's normal
service hours. Members are required to attend the monthly training offered to all AmeriCorps
Members within the AmeriCorps Partners in Program as well as the National Days of Service.
Site Supervisors will plan a quarterly service schedule in calendar format in which both the
member and site supervisor will agree and adhere to. This schedule is meant to outline how the
member will successfully get to the allotted hours within the term limits.
