Fall 2020 Digital Communications Internship

The Henry L. Stimson Center, a nonpartisan public policy research institute committed to finding and promoting practical and innovative solutions to national and international security challenges, seeks an energetic and creative individual to assist with the daily operations in Stimson's Communications Department.
Stimson offers unique internship opportunities based on the values of education, participation, and hands-on practical knowledge. Based on the Center's commitment to professional development, expectations for interns are high. In return, interns can expect a challenging environment that will prepare them for full-time employment in a professional setting. Interns will gain experience with nonprofit communications, as well as an opportunity to interact with all of Stimson's programs, attend internal meetings, go to local think tank events and participate in professional development workshops.
DUTIES
Responsibilities of the Communications intern include:
  • Developing and publishing creative content for our social media channels
  • Maintain brand consistency across platforms
  • Determine which platform is best suited for each piece of content
  • Assisting in the writing of website content, press releases, and news articles
  • Creating infographics to serve as representations of Stimson's work across all channels
  • Monitoring news coverage and maintaining a media database
  • Identifying opportunities for Stimson experts to respond to issues in the news
  • Developing outreach and dissemination strategies for product releases
  • Creating media lists
  • Assisting in AV set-up and support for Stimson events
  • Assist with video shooting and editing tasks
  • Conducting research for the Communications Department
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Students majoring in communications, journalism, graphic design or public relations preferred. Excellent writing and social media skills required using social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, and a basic understanding of how the news media operate. Applicants should have some experience working or at least familiar with design platforms such as Adobe Creative Suites Indesign/Illustrator/Photoshop, Canva, etc. Applicants should have a strong interest in foreign policy issues and should be highly motivated and sincere in their desire for an internship that is challenging and professional in nature. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and be able to work independently and as part of a team. Interns are expected to work regular work hours.
This is an unpaid internship. Preference will be given to those that can commit to a full- time internship 40 hours per week.
