Fall 2020 Japanese Security Policy Internship
Stimson's Japan Program closely examines developments relevant to U.S.-Japan security relations, as well as Japanese security policy and Japanese politics. The Japan Program staff produce research, including projects resulting in publications, and hold regular public seminars to engage the policy community in Washington and Tokyo in discussion on timely topics. The Japan Program also hosts Visiting Fellows annually from the Ministry of Defense, Self-Defense Forces, and universities in Japan for short-term research fellowships.
Responsibilities of the intern can include:
- Provide high quality research memos and copyediting in support of current projects
- Write reports on seminars
- Assist in the coordination of program events, either live or virtual
- Track developments regarding Japanese politics, the U.S.-Japan alliance, changes in the Northeast Asian region, and Japan's relations with its neighbors
- Monitoring the program's active and engaged social media presence
- Self-publishing original analysis of research related to Japanese security policy
Generally, a strong candidate for this position will have:
- A strong interest in East Asian and Japanese security and political issues
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high quality work in both research and administrative tasks
- Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills
- A record of academic excellence
- Although not required, some proficiency in Japanese is strongly recommended
Although a successful candidate often is in an M.A. program, undergraduate students are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week. Preference may be given to those available 30+ hours per week. This is an unpaid experience; please consult with your academic faculty if it is eligible for academic credit.
Due to emerging public health concerns surrounding COVID-19, arrangements may be considered to accommodate for health and safety, including but not limited to interning remotely for part of the internship. Discussion of such arrangements will occur during interviews.
