Public Interest Intern

JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for working alongside Senior Corporate Counsel and other members of the senior leadership team to research and develop legal strategies and solutions intended to identify, assist, and/or rehabilitate at-risk members of the Credit Union, with the goal of formulating positive alternatives to litigation and/or other punitive measures. The final product will bolster the financial health of at-risk members, and contribute potential solutions for the affordability crisis in Central Texas. This internship would require 15- 20 hours per week for the full semester (a minimum of 165 hours).

Planning
  • Work with established UFCU taskforce dedicated to early identification and assistance of at-risk members
  • Research current national and local litigation patterns.
  • Conduct needs assessments of internal and external stakeholders, including members of the Austin legal community
  • Collaborate with internal departments to understand current and future financial struggles of UFCU Members
  • Work with UFCU taskforce to develop a base strategy for the implementation of a multi-pronged program

  • Develop and propose long-term strategies to identify and assist at-risk members
  • Provide supporting data, metrics, and reporting
  • Develop a program using the research and information obtained during planning
  • Create policy and procedural documents to assist in implementing the strategy

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • Student currently enrolled at The University of Texas School of Law
  • Enrolled in the Nonprofit Internship Program, Fall 2020 Semester
Experience
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Legal research and writing
  • Proficient in using Westlaw or Lexis research data bases
  • Demonstrated interest in finance or corporate law e.g., classes in related areas.
  • Credit union and/or banking experience a plus
