Recycling Center Site Attendant

Job Summary
The Quail St Recycling Center is a very busy recycling center with large numbers of recyclers at any given time. Site attendants must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to multi-task. The work environment is fast-paced and labor intensive.

The duties of this position include: 
•   Work independently without supervisor on site
•   Professionally and positively interact with recyclers
•   Respectfully de-escalate and manage disgruntled customers
•   Monitor to ensure customers properly sort their recyclables (aluminum cans, cardboard, scrap metal, glass, plastic bottles and paper)
•   Load and operate compactors
•   Direct site safety between recycling truck drivers and customers, and between customers
•   Educate site users on recycling
•   Other duties and projects as assigned 

Required Duties and Abilities
•   Independently manage site operations and ensure safety
•   Be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment
•   Interact with every customer entering center with a helpful, friendly attitude
•   Respectfulness in responding to customer questions, concerns, and criticisms
•   Able to respectfully de-escalate and manage disgruntled customers
•   Work together with other recycling team members in a cooperative way, being open to constructive suggestions and other team members’ working styles
•   Educate recyclers verbally, with displays, and by handing out educational flyers
•   Helpful, friendly attitude with recycling contractor staff and other City of Lakewood staff
•   Manually assist customers in sorting recyclables when physical assistance is requested
•   Load, operate and monitor the compactors
•   Perform limited mechanical duties
•   Move trash and non-recyclables from rolloffs to designated locations
•   Coordinate timing of switching out of rolloff containers with recycling contractors
•   Report any worker and public safety issues and equipment malfunctions immediately and otherwise communicate often with supervisor
•   Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all necessary times as provided
•   Attend staff meetings and read and respond to work emails
•   Attend training and perform online training on work-related topics
•   Able to use work email and perform Internet searches for recycling information at work
•   Able to use Windows operating system on a desktop or laptop computer and able to learn how to use tablet with Windows operating system
•   Able to learn and use work scheduling software and other City software programs
•   Keep recycling center tidy and clean
•   Clean the kiosk and the shed on a regular basis
•   Perform other duties as assigned (including Earth Day booth staffing, creating displays, and performing presentations at offsite locations and tours of the center (presentations and tours are infrequent and not all site attendants will perform them))

Job Requirements
•   Physical demands include, but are not limited to: continuous loading of the cardboard compactor, which involves crouching and picking up large handfuls, turning and lifting into compactor; lifting up to 40 lbs without assistance; lifting materials overhead; continuous standing, moving and walking; using hands to finger, handle, feel; stooping, kneeling, crouching; able to work year-round in inclement weather (heat, cold, precipitation) on asphalt pavement; manual snow and ice removal with a shovel, snow blower and ice melt
•   There are typically 1 to 4 work shifts scheduled per week, and the center is open and staffed 6 days a week. Work shifts are typically 6.5 hrs to accommodate the hours of the center of 10 am to 4 pm. There are several major holidays during which the center is closed.
•   Work independently without a supervisor on site. Two site attendants work at the site due to the many job duties to be accomplished and the high number of customers at the center at any one time.
