Communications Intern – Fall 2020

Our interns are an integral part of our team. Most of our projects are all-hands-on-deck, and we encourage interns to actively engage with events, publications, and communication strategies that support them. 

Successful candidates will have a passion for the work, an entrepreneurial ethos, and a collegial spirit while also being an effective communicator who can keep up with the fast pace of learning and growing in an organization. Demonstrated interest in international affairs and communications through classwork and/or experience is strongly preferred. Aside from the day-to-day work supporting the media relations, digital, and editorial teams, our interns are also encouraged to pursue their own research projects, taking advantage of the team’s expertise, and that of others in the organization more broadly. This is, however, a hands-on position, not research-based. 

Fall Internships will begin on the following dates:
  • September 8, 2020
  • September 14, 2020
The deadline to apply is July 31, 2020, but applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and will continue until a successful candidate has been selected.

The positions are unpaid, but candidates gain valuable skills, experience, knowledge, and contacts in the Washington, DC international policy community. A monthly metro reimbursement is offered, along with Workshops, briefings with fellows, as well as other senior-level staff. 

Responsibilities

  • Research media outlets and reporter contact information in order to keep press outreach lists current;
  • Monitor the Council’s appearances and mentions in national and international media;
  • Drafting and proofreading external email campaigns, press releases, event and marketing materials, social media posts, and other outreach materials; 
  • Support design, management, and content updates to Council websites.
  • Assist with uploading and managing web publications, event coverage, and graphics using WordPress.
  • Strategizing around events, publication releases, and other Council activities.
  • Engage with internal clients in a supportive, creative, solutions-oriented manner.
  • Work with the graphic designer, video editor, and others to incorporate visual storytelling and interactive elements into web projects.
  • Carry out basic administrative duties, including copying, mailing, and filing.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least a college junior in good standing, a graduate student or a recent graduate, preferably, in Communications.
  • Must have at least a 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0) scale, or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution.
  • Applicants must be able to work full-time (40 hrs/week).
  • Must demonstrate proven interested in international affairs
  •  Independent, self-starter who also works well in a team environment. 
  • Ability to work quickly with careful attention to detail. 
  • Excellent English language communication skills, both written and oral.
  • A demonstrated interested in public affairs and/or marketing. 
  • Prior professional experience with social media, especially Twitter, is beneficial.
  • Previous experience with email marketing tools such as Pardot is a plus.
  •  Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Photoshop and InDesign) experience is beneficial.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS is a plus.

International applications are welcome, but candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. The Atlantic Council does not facilitate visas for internship applicants but can assist in having a third party sponsor a visa. Internship applicants are responsible for any costs associated with the visa sponsorship.

This Fall internships will be remote due to COVID-19 , however, there is a possibility for in-office opportunities for local interns
