FARMWORKER PROGRAM PARALEGAL – NORTH TEXAS

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA) seeks a part-time paralegal for its Farmworker program. The TRLA Migrant program provides legal services to farm workers who live throughout Texas, as well as in six southern states (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee).
The paralegal will primarily provide services in the Texas Panhandle and will telecommute for any work which cannot be provided in-person. The expected commitment is 20 hours/week for part-time employees. However, certain exceptional assignments might require additional hours per week as authorized by the supervisor.
TRLA assists farmworkers primarily in employment cases, such as wage non-payment, workplace health and safety, enforcing field and housing safety laws, and obtaining unemployment and workers’ compensation benefits. The project also handles cases that arise out of a person’s status as a farmworker or a farmworker family, and cases that impact the farmworker community.
Duties include conducting outreach and performing client intakes, preparing community legal education materials, making educational presentations to farmworkers and social service providers, investigating cases, assisting attorneys in litigation, representing clients in administrative cases such as Unemployment Hearings, and referring individuals to other agencies and attorneys.
TRLA paralegals make frequent trips to locations where farmworkers congregate, thus learning the most recent legal problems faced by farmworkers firsthand. The position requires regular travel, sometimes on short notice and sometimes overnight. (The travel is reimbursed by TRLA.) The travel will primarily involve the Texas Panhandle, but may also include other parts of Texas and the six southern states served by TRLA’s Nashville office. Occasionally, the paralegal might also have to travel to other states in which clients have encountered legal problems.
TRLA particularly seeks a person who has been a migrant farmworker or who has experience working with migrant farmworkers.
