The incumbent will serve as a teacher and work with the other academic staff teaching coursework to adult female inmates incarcerated in the South Dakota Women's prison. The position is an exempt, full time position, working 40 hours per week. Classes are taught on a year round basis. Flexibility to teach a variety of coursework is necessary.
Duties include: 
  • providing classroom instruction to inmates primarily in Moral Resonation Therapy and DBT;
  • coursework could also include personal improvement coursework such as Financial Responsibility, Anger Management, Thinking for a Change and Stress Management;
  • assist in maintaining the security procedures in the classroom; 
  • classroom preparation, review and selection of materials, attend meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.
The position generally works 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, but may include some evening courses with the ability to flex out time on Fridays.  . 
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
Licenses and Certifications:
A teaching certificate is not required. However, in order to teach GED courses, the applicant is required to have a degree in a field that allows them to obtain a teaching certificate.

A passion and eagerness to help prepare and promote growth for individuals working towards their next stage of life.  Previous teaching experience would also be beneficial.
Knowledge of:  
  • effective teaching methods for adults with diverse learning abilities;
  • current curriculum development techniques; 
  • classroom preparation, resource materials selection.
Ability to:
  • maintain accountability and motivate students;
  • learn and enforce program structure and the procedures of the facility;
  • work effectively as a member of our team at the Women's Prison.
