Project Manager, Center for Innovation, Trade, and Strategy

The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), the nation's Asia policy think tank, is seeking a project manager interested in acquiring new skills and knowledge to drive a broad range of dynamic project initiatives for the Center for Innovation, Trade, and Strategy (Trade Center).
The Project Manager will manage Trade Center projects covering Asia economic, trade, innovation, and intellectual property policy issues, including projects on digital trade and data governance in the Indo-Pacific, emerging technologies to secure IP and supply chains, U.S.-Japan economic relations, and China's digital silk road.
This is a regular, non-exempt, hourly, full-time (40 hours a week), position located in either NBR's Washington, D.C. office or Seattle office. The position will begin in August 2020, and be supervised by the Vice President, Research.

Responsibilities include:
  • Project Management: managing specific project tasks (including research, publications, databases, events, and distribution) on schedule and within budget; drafting and proof-reading project descriptions, concept papers, correspondence, etc.; maintaining project documentation, web-pages, and filing systems
  • New Project Development: scoping new project concepts, drafting project proposals, researching funding opportunities, and developing and maintaining relations with project sponsors
  • Budgeting: developing project budgets, tracking project expenses, and preparing budget reports
  • Research Support: coordinating substantive research assistance; summarizing research papers; providing research for Center projects and scholars
  • Publications Support: reviewing, providing substantive editing, and fact-checking reports, commentaries, and analyses
  • Event Management: helping to scope event topics, speakers, and agendas; coordinating the planning and management of conferences, workshops, presentations, and briefings (sending invitations, assisting with travel, accommodation, and venue arrangements; note-taking; managing logistical flow; etc.)
  • Staff Management: supervising project associates, fellows, and interns to achieve specific project objectives
  • Relationship Management: maintaining relations with project research directors, scholars, advisors, and other stakeholders
  • Outreach: representing NBR (esp. projects) before a range of audiences (e.g., project stakeholders and constituents)
  • Participating in and supporting other NBR activities as needed
 
Qualifications:
  • Graduate student or recent graduate, preferably in Asia studies, international relations, politics, business, public policy, or related field
  • Demonstrates strong research, writing, and proofreading skills
  • Excellent organizational abilities, including the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Exhibits integrity and good judgement
  • Enjoys learning and wants to acquire new skills and knowledge
  • Some project management experience (preferred)
  • Substantive expertise on a range of countries and issues (substantive knowledge and/or language skills) Knowledge of and interest in U.S. trade, economic, technology, intellectual property, or foreign policy, especially with Asia
  • Advanced Asian language skills a plus, particularly Chinese, Korean, or Japanese
  • Must be able to understand each project's scope/relevance in order to work effectively with scholars and other stakeholders
