Network Security Engineer

The Network Security Engineer is part of the IT Department for the City of Naperville which makes use of Cloud and local resources. Recently completed was a migration to Exchange Online. As a member of the prestigious What Works Cities initiative, Naperville will improve results for their residents through data and evidence. Recently launched were Open Data and Performance Management portals. Going forward, it is crucial that the City’s IT Department continue to develop a team that understands the complexities of a cloud-based environments to further the City’s goal to provide services that ensure a high quality of life for our residents and also be a high-performing government entity in the technology space. The Network Security Engineer is a key member of this team.
Responsibilities:
Some of the responsibilities of the Network Security Engineer will include:
  • Installs, upgrades, troubleshoots and repairs a variety of software, hardware and infrastructure, including firewalls, routers, switches, servers, storage, Voice over IP (VoIP) phone system, data backup and virtual infrastructure.
  • Monitors security advisory guidance to ensure all necessary network security updates, patches and preventive measures are in place. Uses tools to test the efficacy of in place services, servers, and network devices, to validate patches and other security measures are working as designed.
  • Installs, maintains, monitors and troubleshoots firewalls, intrusion prevention/detection systems and other network and server infrastructure to ensure the security and integrity of the City’s information systems.
  • Acts as a lead staff resource for network implementation and network security related projects.
  • Leads project teams in creating, evaluating, modifying and implementing network configurations to maximize network efficiency, in alignment with existing technology investments and long-term strategic plans.
Qualifications:
Required:
  • Associate’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in network security.
  • Valid Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Security certification.
  • Current Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) or equivalent.
  • Valid State of Illinois Driver’s License.
Preferred Licenses, Certifications:
  • Valid Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Security certification.
  • CISSP coursework and/or certification.
