Mechanical Engineer - Robotic Hands

“TELEXISTENCE” is a concept that was first proposed in 1980 by Dr. Susumu Tachi, Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo and the chairman of TELEXISTENCE Inc., which refers to the notion of human beings in effect being in a place other than where he or she actually exists and being able to act freely in that remote environment – essentially expanding the presence of human beings – as well as the technological systems that make this possible.

We are looking for a mechanical engineer who can join out team and develop robotic hands with multi-DOFs from the scratch. Our robots will be deployed into retail shopfront, therefore the hands will need to withstand the daily use in real life environment (as opposed to pure R&D use).

Job Descriptions
  • In a small team of engineers (5-10), lead robot hand development initiatives.
  • Define functional specifications based on business and operational requirements.
  • Lead the mechanical design and prototyping to meet the requirements.
  • Plan and conduct QA for successful deployment.
  • Select optimal actuator (DC motors, stepping motors, air cylinders, etc) and power transmission mechanism (gears, timing belts, links, etc.) that enable product market fit.

Requirements
  • Extensive experience (academic or professional) in researching and developing robotic hands, including repeated hypothesis testing with prototypes.
  • Ability to find an optimal and realistic mechanical design solution under tight time constraint.
  • Experience with SolidWorks.
  • Hands-on experience in evaluating and extracting hardware issues and making necessary changes for improvement.
  • Work experiences in manufacturing and ability to design detailed hardware specs at the mass production level is a big plus.
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving and goal oriented environment where everyone works autonomously without much handholding.

This position is located in Tokyo, Japan.
