Web Designer (Job Id 14202)

Web Designers work closely with South Dakota state agency staff to create the look, layout, and features of a website. The job involves understanding both graphic design and computer programming. Once a website is created, a designer helps with maintenance and additions to the website. They work with development teams or managers for keeping the site up-to-date and prioritizing needs, among other tasks.
Responsibilities include, but aren't limited to:
  • conceptualizing creative ideas with clients;
  • testing and improving the design of the website;
  • establishing design guidelines, standards, and best practices;
  • maintaining the appearance of websites by enforcing content standards;
  • designing visual imagery for websites and ensuring that they are in line with branding for clients;
  • working with different content management systems;
  • communicating design ideas using user flows, process flows, site maps, and wireframes;
  • incorporating functionalities and features into websites;
  • designing sample pages including colors and fonts;
  • preparing design plans and presenting the website structure.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Degree related to web design and 3 or more years of web design experience is preferred. Marketing experience would also be beneficial.
Knowledge of:
  • software Development Lifecycle (SDLC);
  • SCRUM, an Agile framework;
  • fundamentals of design imaging;
  • basic web design;
  • animation;
  • multimedia design;
  • content management;
  • editing for video and audio;
  • multimedia programming and technology;
  • graphic design software including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and other visual design tools;
  • front-end development web programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JQuery, and JavaScript.
Ability to:
  • understand content management systems;
  • understand search engine optimization principles;
  • understand cross-browser compatibility issues;
  • apply visual design skills;
  • apply up-to-date experience with international web protocols, standards, and technologies;
  • be creative and open to new ideas;
  • adapt and be willing to learn new techniques;
  • excellent communication skills;
  • prepare and deliver speeches and technical presentations before the general public, governmental agencies, and professional organizations around the topic of Web Design;
  • research, evaluate, and recommend new technology solutions;
  • mentor new staff;
  • build and maintain effective working relationships;
  • reason logically;
  • pay attention to detail;
  • work in a team environment;
  • adapt to changing needs;
  • take initiative.
Additional Requirements: To be considered, attach a portfolio of web designs/sites that have been implemented throughout career.
