MJ Hegar is a decorated combat veteran, working mom, and Texan. After growing up in rural Texas and graduating from the University of Texas, MJ became a commissioned officer in the Air Force and was selected for a highly competitive spot in the pilot training program. She went on to serve three tours in Afghanistan as a combat search and rescue and medevac pilot.

During a rescue mission, the helicopter MJ was piloting was brought down by the Taliban. MJ and her crew were able to successfully complete the mission. MJ received the Purple Heart for her injuries, and she is one of only a few women to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor.

When her injuries left her unable to fly, MJ was barred from competing for a ground combat position because she was a woman. MJ knew that the policy was not only unjust but a detriment to military preparedness — so she took on the fight to overturn the policy and open up hundreds of thousands of jobs for women in the military.

During her advocacy, MJ got a firsthand look at how broken Washington is -- so now she is taking on the fight for the Senate, because she believes Texans deserve a Senator who will put them ahead of their donors and the special interests to protect and improve health care, tackle climate change, end the gun violence epidemic, and more.
