Health Services Research Assistant I

The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Research Assistant to help manage the day-to-day conduct and workflow of Team Participatory System Dynamics (TeamPSD), which is working to change the way health care quality improvement decisions are made across all layers of the Veterans Health Administration. Duties will include supporting Team PSD "Headquarters" (HQ) with overall management and coordination of the research study, and in particular, activities related to coordination of Team PSD workgroups from around the country, and the activities of the Modeling to Learn team meetings with VA staff.

This is a regular, full time (40 hours/week), non-exempt (hourly-paid) position. Job location: Menlo park, CA

PAVIR is affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). As a condition of employment, all PAVIR employees are required to have an approved appointment with VAPAHCS and complete a background check.

Duties:

Project Management Support:

  • Ensure the Team PSD standard operating procedures are being followed;
  • Assist with coordinating day-to-day project activities using open science TeamPSD platforms GitHub, Open Science Framework, Lucid Meetings, Adobe Connect and BaseCamp;
  • Learn to use the light markdown language "Markdown" on GitHub and on the Open Science Framework;
  • Help schedule, organize and support Team PSD workgroup meetings;
  • Provide platform/technical support for national Modeling to Learn meetings.

Research Project Support:

  • Help with the preparation, review, and editing of NIH and VA study materials and Modeling to Learn online resources;
  • Help obtain and maintain Stanford Institutional Review Board approval;
  • Support principal investigator and co-investigators in the production, coordination, and submission of peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts;
  • Support production of tables and graphs;
  • Maintain the Team PSD Zotero reference library.

HQ Workgroup Support:

  • Provide general administrative support to Team PSD "Headquarters" (HQ);
  • Produce .gifs and other Modeling to Learn design, illustration and infographics;
  • Coordinate study related travel and reimbursement for Team PSD;
  • Coordinate the back-up of Team PSD media, including online websites, meeting audio and video recordings.

Teamwork and Collaboration:

  • Respond to inbound requests from multidisciplinary team members and partners across the US;
  • Communicate any deviations, including delays, in a timely fashion;
  • Report workgroup needs across Team PSD to HQ.

Requirements:

EDUCATION:  Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in psychology, social sciences, administration, design, communications, marketing, or related field is required.

EXPERIENCE:

Required: 1 year of experience supporting research activities (including experience accumulated while completing a college degree);
Desired: 2 years or more of experience supporting research activities, particularly in health care.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Commitment to learn and use open science platforms such as GitHub, Open Science Framework, Lucid Meetings, and BaseCamp;
  • Organized, detail-oriented, self-directed, and dependable;
  • Punctual and always on-time for supporting meetings that rely on technological platforms;
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize workload;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Able to learn VA regulations and procedures regarding research;
  • Effective interpersonal skills, excellent verbal communication and written skills.

Environmental Conditions / Physical Demands:

Physical: Lifting up to 20 lbs occasionally, sitting and standing for long periods of time, bending, repetitive motion, etc.
Environmental: Office environment.
