Office of External and Governmental Affairs Internship

Excellent opportunity to gain experience in international development and work in the Federal Government!

The intern/student volunteer will work on projects for the Office of External and Governmental Affairs (EGA) to present the work of the IAF to a variety of audiences.
 
Potential tasks include:
  • Editing and proofreading of text for use in articles, web pages and social media.
  • Helping to improve social media outreach
  • Drafting material for the “Stories from the Field” section of the IAF website
  • Drafting fact sheets on IAF grants according to country and project theme
  • Helping to create an IAF library and organize a storage space for publications
  • Providing support for IAF meetings, workshops and events.
  • Data transfer and entry of contact information into DonorPerfect software
  • Editing video for vignettes about IAF grantees, staff and mission
  • Other duties as needed
 
Qualifications and Skills Required:
  • Strong writing skills
  • Ability to work on both Mac and PC
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to manage deadlines independently
  • Excellent language skills in English and any of the languages used by the IAF (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Haitian Kreyol)
  • Strong interest in international development issues.
  • Knowledge of Latin American and/or the Caribbean
 
Interns will have the opportunity to:
  • Learn communication strategies for a small, independent foreign assistance agency of the U.S. government that seeks to increase its visibility and credibility among a wide range of audiences
  • Learn from career development professionals about strategies for investing in citizen-led development for greatest impact in the long term
  • Learn about the social, economic, political and cultural context in communities in Latin America where the IAF supports grants
  • Improve writing and editing skills
  • Help create, improve and manage institutional social media accounts
  • Improve Spanish or Portuguese language skills through exposure in a professional setting and/or through courses offered on-site
  • Learn how a U.S. government agency works

The Student Volunteer Service Program provides opportunities for students who are enrolled not less than half-time in high school, undergraduate or graduate programs in accredited US educational institutions to acquire work-related educational experience and become involved in early career exploration as a basis for making realistic decisions regarding their future careers. Through the program, students are provided exposure to the work environment, which should encourage them to develop positive work ethics and to acquaint them with various functions of the IAF mission. 

The Inter-American Foundation offers semester, non-paid volunteer positions within the organization. The IAF website has descriptions of the offices that have volunteer positions available for the upcoming Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions.
