Los Alamos National Laboratory

Research intern

What I liked

It was close to home and got to work with some incredibly smart people. Got to look at real world data and analyzed it myself. Got the opportunity to present my research at the end of the summer and made a poster about it.

Research Intern

May - August 2020 • Los Alamos, NM

What I liked

I was able to work closely with a small lab at LANL. This allowed me to learn a lot from the PI and postdoc about their research and make a significant contribution.

What I wish was different

Originally the position was in-person but it was switched to online. I think it would have been a really great experience if I were to live in New Mexico for the summer.

Advice

Applying for positions at LANL is really easy for students. I found a couple of individuals I was interested in working with and sent emails with my CV and was eventually accepted.

Student Intern

May - August 2020 • Los Alamos, NM

What I liked

They focused on treating interns very professionally and like an adult. Allowed for a lot of independent work and a lot of communication as well. Very understanding and offered a lot of great career advice.

What I wish was different

The internship being in person instead of remote.

Advice

To be open with your mentor and request help or explanation if needed on projects. They understand that you are still taking classes and don't have the answer or knowledge on how to do everything.
