What I liked

It was a welcoming firm that is clearly dedicated to helping their interns improve.

Take advantage of the various opportunities and resources the company provides.

KPMG Embark Scholar

July - August 2020 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

The company culture is so positive! All of the associates were friendly, very team-oriented, and always there to assist should there be any question or help needed. Despite being online, I still feel that I was given the necessary resources that I needed to perform my work from a virtual setting. I was also able to meet and connect with so many new people (other interns, associates, directors, partners, etc.)

What I wish was different

I wish that my experience was longer. Due to the COVID outbreak, our experiences were shortened from 8 weeks to 4 weeks. I had such a great time even with the shortened schedule!

Advice

Do not hesitate to ask questions, if anything they are encouraged!! Also, be a SPONGE; try to absorb as much as you can from this experience. Though my experience was presented to me in a virtual format, it does not take away from the value of the knowledge that I gained from my time as an Embark Scholar :) Good Luck!

Audit Intern

July - August 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the connectivity of the internship, despite limitations from Covid-19 and quarantine. The internship really encouraged us to take initiative on what we make out of the internship.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more exposure to actual engagements and work.

Advice

Seek out as much experience as you can. Don't do things just to get by. Do them to develop and grow as a professional.

Seasonal Business tax intern

April 2020 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

It was a smooth transition from my regular internship which ran from January 3rd - April 15th. With Covid-19 I had already been working remotely with this company so I had the technology to continue this work throughout the summer and moving forward. They are super understanding with the school work and allow me to continually learn more tax software.

What I wish was different

I’m a very extroverted person so I very much missed the in person atmosphere in the office. This is something out of their control, but overall they have several virtual events i.e. talking tables and happy hours.

Advice

If you find a company you want to stay out after school keep your options open to new opportunities they might give you.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

Try to get to know everyone you meet! Everyone who works at KPMG is incredibly intelligent and ambitious and want to help you excel your career. I got so much great advice from learning about others experience with the firm.

What I liked

It was virtual, so I still had pretty good interaction with mentors and coworkers

What I wish was different

I wish it would’ve been in person, and that we couldn’t been put on an actual client project

Advice

Try to get as many contacts as possible during an internship. They will remember you if you get a return offer.

Audit Intern

July - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

All of the time and effort that the company put into making this virtual internship experience the best it could be under the difficult circumstances. It wasn't ideal for anyone, but I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given this past summer to connect with professionals from the firm and am even more grateful for the full-time job offer that was extended to me.

Financial Crimes

July - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how even given the pandemic, the company still found a way for the intern class to come together virtually and engage in a meaningful internship program.

What I wish was different

I wish we would have been able to do more hands on work, but I understand privacy laws considering we were remote.

Advice

Take in all of the trainings because they will in turn be useful.

Tax transformation technology intern

July - August 2020 • Montvale, NJ

What I liked

I loved the way they took care of the interns. Given the pandemic it surely would have been easier to cancel the internship but Kpmg went above and beyond to make our experience as fulfilling as possible.

What I wish was different

I think given the circumstances it was done in the best way possible.

Advice

It is what you make of it. You need to get out of your comfort zone and make an effort to network, especially now when everything is online.

Tax Processor

July 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

Great people who wish the best for each other. Flexibility of work conditions. Mentors that guide you to become a better professional.

What I wish was different

I wish they had a better internal structure that motivates and ensures part time employees. Part time employees are confused because they are not an intern, yet not an associate. It would be beneficial to have a set procedure and goals to determine upper placement of part time employees.

Advice

KPMG is one of the best firms to work with for a reason. They have great people and energy. If you want to work with KPMG, make sure you have good energy.

I wish that New York wasn't so expensive to live in.

Advice

Go in and hold nothing back and be willing to take risks and make mistakes and learn as much as you can from those mistakes. Know Python, R, SQL and be good at dealing with ambiguity!

What I liked

I loved getting experiences on multiple audit teams, meeting people in the firm, and living in Denver. Overall I learned so much throughout my internship and met so many great people.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have heard more about people's path at the firm (people that had been there a while such as managers and partners).

Advice

Go into it willing to learn and be flexible, but know that there are so many opportunities in the accounting world, so don't feel pressure to like the first company you recruit with or do an internship with.

The engagement team was professional and welcoming. I really felt like a part of the team. The work was directly contributing to the firm's business, not stereotypical "intern work." I never fetched a single cup of coffee.
