Jacobs

Electrical Engineering Intern

June 2021 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Interns were very well welcomed, I felt like I was apart of the company even though it was a temporary job. I learned a lot, got to touch on different softwares and was trained accordingly.

What I wish was different

I wished that I had more opportunities of being at the office. I was able to go to the office for about 2 to 3 weeks, but after the Covid cases rose, Jacobs decided to put us in a virtual setting.

Advice

I was not planning to get an internship the summer, but I first applied as I wanted to see if I would get any chance to interview. It turned out well, so one important advice is don’t be scared to apply to multiple companies even thought you are not planning on doing internships, it is a way to practice for when the right time comes. Also don’t be scared to ask questions, everyone knows you are an intern and it actually makes you look good as you seem interested and eager to learn. Lastly, don’t limit yourself to small companies because you don’t come from an « Ivy League university » companies look for out of classroom experience, if you have that nothing can stop you, but if you don’t find a way to get that experience. These are the advices I think are the best, following this will definitely lead you to you dream company!

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2023 • Sharonville, OH

What I liked

During this internship, I worked as a mechanical engineering intern mostly doing HVAC and utilities such as chilled water and heating hot water. My first task was to perform airflow calculations on the air handling units (AHUs) in the warehouse and utility buildings of a pharmaceutical plant. The goal was to calculate heating and cooling required for each AHU, and the flow of chilled and hot water in order to do so. Another task was to calculate the energy savings of heat recovery wheels in the AHUs. I learned about the different types of heat recovery systems such as the heat recovery wheel and the heat recovery coil. These use the temperature of the return air to heat or cool the outside air coming in, and therefore results in less chilled and hot water required. My last project was to edit airflow and instrumentation diagrams (AF&IDs) using AutoCAD. In addition to those projects, I also had some smaller tasks such as making pump and heat exchanger selections. The thing that I liked the most about this internship was the variety of people I was able to work with. I worked with people at all levels of the company and at various stages of their careers. This allowed me to get different perspectives about how people handle projects and tasks. I also enjoyed the various intern events that allowed me to meet other interns and learn about different departments such as mechanical, piping, architectural, structural, electrical, and digital delivery. I learned about how these departments must work together in order to stay on schedule and deliver an end goal. Overall, I feel like I learned a lot about HVAC and utilities in a commercial setting.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten to do some design work in addition to the calculations I did. I felt like I was working behind the scenes and would like to get more experience working with the client. I hope to learn more about Revit during my next term to get more experience with design work. In addition, I wish more people came into the office. I spent quite a bit of time waiting around for answers to questions. I feel like it is a lot more productive to be able to ask someone a question in person as opposed to waiting for responses to messages. It is also easier to learn as an intern when more people are around to interact with.

Advice

The biggest piece of advice I have is don't be afraid to ask questions. This is a learning experience and the best way to learn is to ask questions. In addition to that, it is ok to make mistakes. Managers do not expect you to know how to do everything coming in, and there will not be any tasks given to you that you can mess up too badly as an intern. Next, come in with an open mind as this is an opportunity to learn about what you do and do not like to do. Lastly, I have found that it is much more efficient to make a phone call as opposed to messaging through Teams. This not only decreases downtime, but also builds relationships with other people you are working with.

Computer Engineering Intern

May 2023 • Severn, MD

What I liked

I liked that it was an inclusive environment and that I got to meet a lot of people in different areas of the business. I also enjoyed directly working on a major project and having a peer mentor.

What I wish was different

I wish my peer mentor was not spread so thin, or if I had a peer mentor that was not assigned to all the CompE interns. I also wish there was more of an in-person atmosphere, as the majority of my team worked remotely

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and take advantage of all the learning resources that are offered!
